The Air Transport Association (ATA /now A4A) and the FAA realized that the US was not producing enough to replace its retiring pilots and fill the industry’s forecast growth needs. In response, they created the Spec401 committee to increase pilot production and upgrade training standards to prepare pilots to operate the airlines’ jet transport aircraft.
